As well as a loss of revenue and opportunities to demonstrate their skills and abilities, athletes also faced a potentially dangerous era of social distancing, with media generating disproportionately negative publicity if they did not adhere to strict guidelines.
For many, the end of the season brought an end to years of training, preparation and the expectation of competing in front of a stadium full of fans. While a number of sports leagues are still adjusting their schedules and rethinking how they can engage fans, the lessons learned from this difficult period will undoubtedly shape the future of the industry for the better.
